2027: AUGUSTINE URGES SOUTH-EAST TO BACK TINUBU STRATEGICALLY
As political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum, the Coordinator of Club 17 Peace Initiative in Aba South Local Government Area, Onyeama Augustine, has urged the South-East to J reconsider its political approach and prioritise strategic alliances over emotional considerations, describing support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a potential pathway to advancing the region's long-term political interests.
Augustine argued that the Igbo should approach the 2027 presidential election with clear political calculations, stressing that building alliances and maintaining constructive relationships with the federal government could strengthen the South-East's position in Nigeria's political landscape. He noted that political decisions should be guided by long-term benefits and opportunities for meaningful national inclusion.
He further cautioned against political choices that could undermine the region's opportunities for participation in national leadership, insisting that the South-East must carefully assess its options rather than make decisions driven solely by sentiments. According to him, the region should pursue a political direction that would position it favourably in future conversations about Nigeria's presidency.
“As Southeasterners, we are not going into politics with emotions; we have to go into politics with strategy. Supporting Tinubu for Ndigbo is a strategic alliance. We cannot afford to gamble for four years. Any time Nigerians think it is the time for Ndigbo to be president, we should be proper presidents,” Augustine stated.

His position adds to the growing debate over the South-East's political calculations ahead of 2027, particularly the questions of strategic partnerships, regional interests and the quest for greater representation in Nigeria's national leadership.
