ASUU-ABSU Rejects Lecturer’s Suspension, Demands Arrears and Recall Before Ending Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abia State University (ABSU) Chapter, has rejected the suspension of one of its lecturers, insisting that the decision must be reversed before the ongoing indefinite strike can be called off. The union maintained that the suspension remains a major point of contention in the dispute between the academic staff and the university authorities.
ASUU-ABSU also demanded the full payment of all outstanding salary and other legitimate arrears owed its members. According to the union, resolving the financial obligations to lecturers is essential to restoring industrial harmony and creating the right environment for academic activities to resume effectively.
The union further insisted that the suspended lecturer must be recalled as part of the conditions for ending the indefinite strike. It argued that the continued suspension has deepened tensions within the institution and that meaningful dialogue must lead to concrete actions rather than promises.
The development has raised concerns among students and other members of the university community, as the prolonged industrial action continues to disrupt academic activities. Students are particularly anxious about the effect of the strike on lectures, examinations, academic calendars, and their overall educational progress.
ASUU-ABSU called on the university management and other relevant stakeholders to urgently address the issues at stake through genuine negotiation. The union stressed that its demands are aimed at securing fairness, protecting the interests of its members, and ensuring a stable academic environment for both lecturers and students.
The union therefore maintained that there will be no end to the indefinite strike until its key demands are satisfactorily addressed, particularly the recall of the suspended lecturer and payment of the outstanding arrears. It urged all parties to work toward a lasting resolution that will allow academic activities at Abia State University to resume without further disruption.
