The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has condemned the alleged assault of a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, following an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student.

The incident, which occurred within the university environment on Saturday, August 15, 2026, was captured on video, with footage subsequently circulating widely on social media.

In a statement issued by the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, the management described the incident as unfortunate and condemned the use of violence, self-help, or what it termed “jungle justice” under any circumstances.

The university said the Vice-Chancellor, Ugochukwu Anyaehie, has consistently reaffirmed UNIZIK’s zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct, harassment and other forms of inappropriate behaviour.

However, management stressed that allegations of misconduct must be addressed through established institutional procedures and due process.

“No individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the University environment,” the statement said.

Given the seriousness of the allegations, the university management has ordered an immediate, comprehensive, and impartial investigation to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.

It added that the matter is currently under full review, with appropriate administrative processes activated to ensure that justice is served fairly and objectively to all parties involved.
