Owaza Deserves More Than Empty Promises and Political Attention During Elections

For years, the people of Owaza in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State have continued to endure neglect despite their immense contribution to the state's economy. As the host community of the oil resources that qualify Abia as an oil-producing state, Owaza plays a significant role in attracting increased federal revenue to the state. Sadly, the benefits of this status have hardly translated into meaningful development for the people whose land generates such wealth.

The recurring pattern has been one of political promises without visible action. During election seasons and major political engagements, leaders often visit the community with assurances of development and better living conditions. However, once the cameras are gone and the political activities fade away, those promises are rarely fulfilled, leaving residents feeling abandoned and forgotten by those entrusted with their welfare.

The recent pipeline explosion in Owaza has once again exposed the vulnerability of the community. Many residents are now grappling with the devastating impact of the incident, having lost valuable properties, sources of income, and means of livelihood. Families affected by the disaster are left to face uncertainty while waiting for the support and intervention they desperately need.

It is deeply troubling that a community so crucial to Abia State's economic standing continues to suffer from inadequate attention and poor development.

The people of Owaza deserve far more than sympathy visits and public relations gestures. They deserve sustainable infrastructure, security, environmental protection, and genuine government commitment that extends beyond election periods and political convenience.
