Good Governance Begins at the Ward Level — Kachocho Pledges Grassroots Representation for Aba South
For the people of Aba South State Constituency, good governance should begin at the grassroots and be felt at the ward level. It means having a representative who understands the realities of each community and is willing to listen to residents, traders, youths, women, artisans, farmers, and community leaders. From Iheorji to Nnentu, Okpororenyi, Obuda, Omuma, etc and other communities, effective representation should ensure that local concerns are identified and brought into the appropriate government and legislative discussions.
At the ward level, grassroots representation can take practical forms: regular community meetings, accessible constituency offices, youth and skills-development programmes, support for small businesses and traders, and channels for residents to report pressing infrastructure or social needs. For example, where a community identifies poor road conditions, inadequate healthcare facilities, unemployment, or challenges affecting local markets, a representative can document those concerns, engage the relevant authorities, and provide feedback to the community on what action is being pursued. Hon. Chinedu Akpulonu has stated that he intends to maintain regular engagement with communities and establish a functional constituency office.
Each ward also has its own priorities, and those differences matter. A ward with significant trading activity may require greater attention to market infrastructure and support for small businesses; communities with many young people may prioritise skills acquisition, employment opportunities, and entrepreneurship; while other areas may place greater emphasis on roads, healthcare, sanitation, or access to government programmes. A ward-by-ward approach would therefore involve listening first, identifying specific needs, and pursuing interventions according to the realities of each community rather than treating the entire constituency as though every community has identical challenges.
Accountability should equally reach every ward. Residents should be able to ask what programmes have been pursued, what projects have been attracted, what legislative matters have been sponsored, and what opportunities have been secured for the constituency. Akpulonu has spoken of providing periodic accounts of his stewardship. If implemented, such reporting could allow communities in Iheorji, Nnentu, Okpororenyi, Obuda, Omuma, and elsewhere to follow the activities associated with their representation and assess progress against stated commitments.
As the 2027 political conversation develops, the people of Aba South can examine how each candidate intends to translate promises into practical grassroots engagement. For Hon. Chinedu Akpulonu, the stated emphasis is on accessibility, ward-level engagement, accountability, equitable representation, and development that responds to community needs. Ultimately, effective representation should be judged not only by what is said during campaigns, but by how clearly the needs of individual communities are heard, represented, followed up, and communicated back to the people.
