Govs Should Complete Eight-Year Tenure Before Seeking Other Positions – Akpabio

The senate president, who spoke during the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, cautioned governors against abandoning their constituents in pursuit of other offices.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged state governors to complete their constitutionally permitted eight-year tenure before seeking other political positions.

Akpabio stated this on Wednesday during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Addressing the gathering, he cautioned governors against abandoning their constituents in pursuit of other offices, urging them to remain committed to the people who elected them.

“I did eight years as a governor, and the constitution says you should do eight years. There’s no need for you to start eyeing another position that is not available,” he said.

The Senate President also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, assuring him that lawmakers would help communicate the administration’s achievements and message of national unity to Nigerians.

Akpabio urged Tinubu to encourage lawmakers and other political stakeholders to support his second-term ambition, citing the backing he said the President enjoys within the National Assembly.

The inauguration of the campaign council marks a step in the APC’s preparations for the 2027 general election, as the ruling party seeks to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election.
