IG Orders Police to Shoot Anyone Found with Illegal Firearms
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has issued a directive instructing officers to take decisive action against individuals found carrying illegal firearms, including the use of lethal force where necessary. The order forms part of renewed efforts to tackle rising insecurity and curb the proliferation of unlawful weapons across the country.
According to the police leadership, the directive is aimed at dismantling criminal networks responsible for violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, cult-related violence, and other threats to public safety. Authorities believe that restricting the circulation of illegal firearms is essential to restoring peace and security.
The IGP emphasized that law enforcement personnel must remain vigilant during patrols, stop-and-search operations, and intelligence-led raids. Officers have also been directed to ensure that anyone found unlawfully possessing firearms is treated as a serious security threat while carrying out their duties within the law.
Security analysts say the move reflects the determination of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen its response to criminal activities. They, however, note that strict professionalism, accountability, and respect for legal procedures will be vital in implementing such a directive to avoid abuse.
The police have also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information on the movement of illegal weapons and individuals involved in criminal activities. Citizens were urged to report suspicious persons or activities through appropriate security channels.
As the directive takes effect, attention is expected to focus on its implementation and its impact on the country's security situation. Many Nigerians hope the renewed crackdown on illegal firearms will contribute to reducing violent crime while ensuring that policing remains consistent with the rule of law and the protection of human rights.
