ASUU-ABSU Vows To Sustain Strike Until Suspended Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze Is Recalled
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abia State University (ABSU) chapter, has vowed to sustain its ongoing strike until the suspended lecturer, Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze, is recalled. The chapter chairman, Dr. Chidi Mbah, said the union would not accept the suspension, which followed a controversial social media post by the professor.
Mbah explained that the strike began on August 11, before Nwaeze made the post that led to his suspension. He said the union’s action was primarily driven by unresolved issues concerning lecturers’ salaries, welfare, unpaid allowances and other outstanding obligations.
According to the ASUU chairman, the union had engaged the Abia State Government and university management through several meetings and other channels before resorting to industrial action. He maintained that lecturers were owed varying periods of salaries, with some reportedly having outstanding payments running into several months.
Mbah stressed that even if the government meets the union’s financial and welfare demands, ASUU-ABSU would not call off the strike unless Nwaeze is reinstated. He said the union’s position was intended to protect academic freedom, due process and the autonomy of the university, while urging members to remain united until the issues are resolved.
