INEC, AU Election Monitoring Delegates Meet In Abuja Ahead Of 2027

The leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is currently meeting with the African Union election monitoring delegation, led by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting is essentially to discuss INEC’s preparations for the election, especially in areas such as the application of technology, logistics arrangements, as well as security.
Leader of the delegation said they hope to hear from the Commission lessons it has learnt from the 2023 general election, and strategies in place to ensure that the gains of that election are consolidated, and mistakes are not repeated in 2027.
Other areas of interest to the delegation also include results management, arrangements in place for inclusivity, and how to gain the trust of the electorate.
National Commissioner, Professor Rhoda Gumus, is representing the INEC chairman at the meeting.

The dispute centres on Wike’s support for Tinubu alongside his continued political affiliation with the PDP and his promotion of a cross-party “Rainbow Coalition,” while APC governors insist their campaign commitment remains with the party’s candidates. A senior presidential aide cited by The PUNCH said Tinubu could engage the parties while he is in France in an effort to resolve their differences and prevent the dispute from affecting their respective political activities. The report said the proposed intervention could take place before the end of the week, although the meeting had not been independently confirmed. The disagreement intensified after Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the APC Progressive Governors’ Forum, said the governors would not support any political arrangement that could weaken the APC or undermine the party’s candidates in 2027. Wike has maintained that his support for Tinubu’s presidential bid does not require him to support APC candidates in governorship and legislative contests. Wike has also rejected the suggestion that he sought an alliance with the APC Governors’ Forum, saying he had never approached the forum over the proposed coalition. He has argued that his political activities are focused on supporting Tinubu while allowing opposition parties to contest other positions. The dispute has also generated reactions within the APC, including from the party’s South-East leadership, which has backed the governors and criticised Wike’s comments. Meanwhile, former House Minority Leader Farouk Adamu-Aliyu said the APC appreciates Wike’s previous role in weakening the PDP but would not allow him to use the ruling party to advance a separate political structure. With the 2027 elections approaching, the reported effort by Tinubu to mediate reflects the significance of the disagreement within the governing political establishment. Whether the parties reach an understanding will depend on how they reconcile Wike’s stated support for Tinubu with the APC governors’ insistence on party candidates and organisational loyalty.
