Deputy Speaker Advocates Modern Security Ecosystem, Reduced Dependence on Foreign Arms
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Ph.D, CFR, today attended the Nigeria People’s Strategic Conference and Defence Exhibition 2026 in Abuja, where he reiterated the urgent need for a coordinated national response to insecurity. Speaking on the conference theme, “Building a Modern Security Ecosystem: Integrating Private Sector Capacity into Nigeria’s National Security Architecture,” Kalu stressed the importance of strengthening institutions, developing local capacity, and fostering strategic collaboration among all sectors of society.
Addressing participants at the strategic gathering, the Deputy Speaker called on stakeholders in Nigeria’s defence industry to intensify efforts toward local arms production and reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign military imports. According to him, building a robust indigenous defence ecosystem would not only enhance national security but also create employment opportunities, encourage technological innovation, and minimize strategic vulnerabilities.
Kalu further emphasized that national security is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of all sectors. He urged the financial sector to strengthen measures against criminal financing by blocking channels through which illicit funds are moved. He also acknowledged the vital role of civil society organizations in promoting dialogue, building trust between communities and government institutions, and contributing to sustainable peace across the country.
The Deputy Speaker reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to providing the necessary legislative support for national security through constitutional reforms, budgetary appropriations, and effective oversight. He referenced the recent passage of key constitutional amendments, noting that the House voted overwhelmingly in favour of measures aimed at enhancing security.

Kalu concluded by expressing confidence in Nigeria’s resilience, stating that with sound policies, strong institutions, and collective determination, the nation can build a safer, stronger, and more secure future for all citizens.
