Onyeama Augustine Urges Abia State Government to Enact Balanced Tenancy Law to Protect Tenants and Property Owners

Umuahia, Abia State – Public affairs analyst Onyeama Augustine has called on the Abia State Government to introduce a comprehensive tenancy law that strikes a fair balance between protecting tenants and safeguarding the rights of legitimate property owners. According to him, the increasing cases of fraud and criminal activities linked to unregistered house agents have exposed serious gaps in the state's housing and rental system, making urgent legislative intervention necessary.

Augustine noted that many individuals posing as estate agents operate without any form of registration or regulation, deceiving unsuspecting house seekers with fake property listings, collecting illegal fees, and disappearing without providing accommodation. He stressed that these fraudulent practices have caused severe financial losses and emotional distress for countless residents across the state.

He further expressed concern that the activities of some criminal elements masquerading as property agents have gone beyond financial fraud. In some reported cases, victims have allegedly been lured to isolated locations where they were attacked, robbed, or even killed. Augustine described the situation as a growing security challenge that requires immediate attention from both the government and law enforcement agencies.

To address the problem, Augustine urged the Abia State Government to establish a legal framework that mandates the registration and licensing of all property agents while providing clear rights and responsibilities for landlords, tenants, and real estate professionals. He said such legislation should include strict penalties for fraudulent operators, encourage transparency in rental transactions, and create an accessible platform for verifying licensed agents before any housing agreement is concluded.

While emphasizing the need to protect tenants from exploitation, Augustine maintained that the law must also preserve the legitimate rights of property owners by ensuring that contractual agreements are respected and disputes are resolved fairly. He expressed confidence that a balanced tenancy law would restore public confidence in the housing sector, improve security, and promote a safer, more transparent rental market for everyone in Abia State
