Augustine has expressed reservations over what he described as the opposition’s sudden embrace of “newfound patriotism,” questioning both its timing and authenticity. He argued that many of the same political actors now projecting themselves as defenders of national interest were previously in positions of authority where they had opportunities to make meaningful change.
He further questioned the moral standing of these actors, asking where their patriotic enthusiasm was during their years in office. Augustine recalled periods when public institutions reportedly weakened and governance structures struggled, insisting that it is contradictory for those linked to such eras to now re-emerge as reform advocates. In his view, this shift represents an attempt to rewrite political history rather than confront it.
Describing the evolving opposition coalition, Augustine referred to them as “displaced power brokers” whose actions, according to him, are driven more by ambition than ideology. He maintained that many of these figures are known for frequent party switches, suggesting that their political consistency is guided by opportunity rather than principle or long-term vision for national development.
Echoing a similar sentiment, Augustine argued that Nigeria’s political landscape has moved beyond what he termed “politics of entitlement and elite recycling.” He stated that the electorate is becoming more discerning, less tolerant of recycled leadership narratives, and increasingly focused on accountability and performance rather than rhetoric or nostalgia.
Augustine also defended the ongoing reforms under President Bola Tinubu, describing them as bold, necessary, and geared toward long-term national progress. He emphasized that leadership should not be seen as a right to be inherited or rotated among familiar elites, but as a responsibility earned through vision, credibility, and sustained public trust.
