Just In:
Performance, Not Sentiment, Should Remain the Standard for Leadership in Bende.
By: Aglow TV
It is important to remember that Hon. Nnenna Elendu Ukeje, who comes from the same Umunna extraction as Dr. Chima Anyaso, represented Bende Federal Constituency for an uninterrupted period of twelve years. Throughout those years, there was little or no public outcry from those who are today insisting that eight years is enough. The same voices that now advocate for rotation and power shift were largely silent when she successfully sought and secured multiple terms in office.
This raises a fundamental question about consistency in political arguments. Where were the advocates of "it is somebody else's turn" when Hon. Ukeje was enjoying overwhelming support for a fourth term? Why were the principles of rotation and power sharing not vigorously promoted then? It appears that standards are being applied differently depending on the individual involved, and many people find such a position difficult to reconcile.
Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has not only served as a member of the House of Representatives but has risen to become the Deputy Speaker, one of the most influential positions in Nigeria's legislative arm. His elevation has brought increased visibility and access to federal opportunities for Bende Federal Constituency, creating a stronger connection between the constituency and the centre of national decision-making.
Beyond occupying a high office, his record is marked by tangible achievements across the constituency. Federal employment opportunities have been facilitated for numerous sons and daughters of Bende. Infrastructure projects, including road construction and rehabilitation, have reached various communities. Schools have been renovated and upgraded, while solar-powered street lights, boreholes, ICT centres, and other development initiatives have been delivered to improve the quality of life of residents.
Furthermore, skills acquisition programmes, empowerment schemes, and constituency development projects have been implemented across different wards. These projects are visible and measurable, making it difficult to dismiss the impact they have had on the lives of ordinary people. When examined objectively, the evidence of performance speaks more convincingly than campaign slogans or emotional political appeals.
No one disputes the constitutional right of any qualified individual to contest for elective office. However, leadership should be evaluated on the basis of competence, service, capacity, and results rather than claims of entitlement.
f anyone seeks to replace a representative with a proven track record, the burden should be to present a stronger vision and a better record of potential service. Politics is ultimately about delivering value to the people. For many residents of Bende, twelve years was acceptable when it benefited certain interests; therefore, portraying eight years as excessive today appears inconsistent. The people of Bende are capable of assessing performance and distinguishing between proven results and mere political rhetoric.
