Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu Engages UK Commonwealth Parliamentary Association on Nigeria’s Constitutional Reform Agenda
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has continued to project Nigeria's legislative vision on the global stage with a high-level engagement at the House of Commons in London. During the visit, he held discussions with members of the UK Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, focusing on key constitutional reforms and governance priorities currently before Nigeria's National Assembly.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on strengthening democratic institutions and deepening collaboration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom through parliamentary diplomacy. Kalu emphasized the importance of learning from global best practices while advancing reforms tailored to Nigeria's unique social, political, and economic realities.
Among the major issues highlighted during the engagement was the proposed Reserved Seats Bill, a constitutional amendment designed to expand the participation of women in governance and legislative decision-making. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to promote greater inclusiveness and ensure broader representation in Nigeria's democratic process.
The Deputy Speaker also spoke extensively on the proposed establishment of State Police, describing it as a significant constitutional reform aimed at improving security across the country. He noted that decentralizing policing would strengthen community-based security, enable quicker responses to local threats, and enhance public safety while maintaining constitutional safeguards.
Energy transition formed another important part of the discussions, with Kalu stressing the need for Nigeria to pursue sustainable development while balancing its economic realities. He explained that constitutional and legislative reforms should support policies that encourage cleaner energy, investment, innovation, and long-term environmental sustainability.
Healthcare also featured prominently during the meeting as Kalu outlined the importance of achieving Universal Health Coverage. He reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to supporting legal and policy frameworks that will expand access to quality healthcare services and improve health outcomes for Nigerians regardless of their social or economic status.
The engagement underscored the growing role of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering international partnerships and exchanging legislative experiences. It also highlighted the value of collaboration between Commonwealth nations in addressing common governance challenges through dialogue, institutional reforms, and shared democratic values.

Kalu's visit to the House of Commons reflects his continued commitment to promoting Nigeria's constitutional amendment agenda before international partners while seeking constructive ideas that can strengthen the country's democratic institutions. The discussions reinforced the importance of inclusive governance, improved security, sustainable development, and accessible healthcare as pillars of Nigeria's ongoing constitutional and national development efforts.
