A social advocate and community leader, Onyeama Augustine, has raised serious concerns over the growing rate of excessive rent hikes, arbitrary agency fees, and the activities of unregistered estate agents in Aba, Abia State. He described the situation as alarming, noting that many residents are finding it increasingly difficult to secure affordable accommodation due to the unchecked practices of some agents and property owners operating within the city.
Speaking during a meeting with a group of concerned tenants who visited him in Aba, Onyeama lamented that rents in several parts of the commercial city have risen to over one million naira per flat, placing heavy financial pressure on families, traders, and low-income earners. According to him, the sudden increase in housing costs has become a major burden on residents who are already struggling with the present economic realities in the country.
He further called on the government to urgently investigate the activities of unregistered estate agents accused of exploiting tenants through excessive charges, illegal agency practices, multiple sales of properties, and other fraudulent transactions. Onyeama stressed that many unsuspecting residents have fallen victim to dishonest agents who take advantage of the absence of proper regulation within the housing sector in Aba and other parts of the state.
While assuring the affected tenants of his support, Onyeama Augustine promised to escalate the matter to the Abia State House of Assembly for proper legislative attention and possible intervention. He expressed hope that the government would take decisive steps to regulate housing and agency activities in the state in order to protect residents from exploitation and restore sanity within the real estate sector.
