POLICE INSPECTOR KILLED AT IMO COMMISSIONER’S RESIDENCE
A police inspector, identified as Henry Effiong, has reportedly been killed while performing guard duty at the residence of the Imo State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Chief Bar Rex Anunobi, in New Owerri. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of police personnel deployed to private residences and other sensitive locations.
According to the report, the inspector was on duty at the commissioner’s residence when he was attacked and killed. In the course of the incident, his service rifle was also reportedly taken by the assailants, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding the attack and the whereabouts of the stolen weapon.
The killing has once again highlighted the dangers faced by police officers in the line of duty. Beyond the loss of a serving officer, the incident represents another reminder of the risks security personnel encounter while carrying out assignments in an increasingly challenging security environment.
The circumstances also raise questions about the deployment of police officers to protect the residences of public officials. While government officials are entitled to appropriate security protection, many Nigerians continue to question whether scarce police manpower should be concentrated around politicians and their private residences when communities across the state are also in need of effective security coverage.
Security personnel are primarily expected to protect lives and property, maintain public order and respond to threats wherever they occur. Their presence should therefore extend beyond protecting individuals in positions of authority to ensuring that ordinary citizens, businesses and communities can live and operate without fear.
The death of Inspector Henry Effiong should not be treated as another isolated incident. It should prompt a serious review of security deployment, police welfare and the protection provided to officers on duty. Above all, the incident underscores the need for a security system that places the safety of all citizens at the centre of its responsibilities.
