The political landscape in Abia State has witnessed heightened activity following the emergence of Chief Eric Opah as a governorship candidate. Barely 24 hours after receiving his nomination form from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), allegations began circulating on social media claiming that he had made remarks regarding Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The development quickly generated widespread reactions and intensified political discussions across the state.
Responding to the claims, Dr. Eric Opah categorically denied ever making the alleged statement or promising to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu if elected governor. His campaign organization dismissed the viral quote as false and misleading, insisting that it was fabricated by unknown individuals. The campaign further appealed to the public not to be influenced by unverified information circulating online.
The timing of the allegations has become a major point of discussion among political observers and supporters. Many of Opah's followers believe the controversy surfaced immediately after his official nomination because his candidacy has begun attracting significant attention across the state. According to them, the spread of such claims is a calculated attempt to undermine his growing political profile and divert public attention from discussions on governance and policy.
Supporters have therefore maintained that the forthcoming governorship race should be driven by constructive debates on development, economic growth, infrastructure, security, education, and other issues affecting the people of Abia State. They argue that campaigns built on misinformation, propaganda, and character attacks do little to address the genuine aspirations of the electorate and only distract from the important conversations that should shape the state's future.

As preparations for the 2027 governorship election continue, residents of Abia State are encouraged to verify information through credible and official sources before accepting or sharing politically sensitive content. Many believe that the election should ultimately be decided by the quality of ideas, competence, integrity, and leadership offered by the candidates rather than by fabricated controversies or politically motivated misinformation designed to influence public opinion.
