The title was bestowed on Igho in recognition of his contributions to the development of the Sultanate Council, Sokoto State and Nigeria.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, will formally turban veteran broadcaster and television producer, Chief Peter Igho, as Kakakin Daular Usmaniyya on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

A statement from the Sultan’s Palace in Sokoto said the ceremony would take place at the palace, following the conferment of the traditional title on Igho on September 10, 2025.

The title was bestowed on Igho in recognition of his contributions to the development of the Sultanate Council, Sokoto State and Nigeria.

The ceremony is expected to attract prominent Nigerians from different walks of life and across the country, with the aim of strengthening cordial relations and promoting national unity among Nigeria’s diverse communities.

Igho is a veteran Nigerian broadcaster, television producer and media personality who served as an Executive Director at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). He is best known for producing and directing Cock Crow at Dawn, one of Nigeria’s pioneering television dramas, as well as other programmes that helped shape the country’s broadcasting industry.

He has received several national and international awards for his contributions to broadcasting and has mentored generations of media professionals. A native of the Niger Delta, Igho is also recognised for his cultural advocacy, community leadership and philanthropy.

The Sultan of Sokoto, who will preside over the ceremony, is the 20th occupant of the throne and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA). He ascended the throne on November 2, 2006.

A retired Brigadier-General of the Nigerian Army, Sultan Abubakar is widely respected for his advocacy for peace, interfaith dialogue, education and national unity.

The Sultanate traces its heritage to the Sokoto Caliphate, also known as Daular Usmaniyya, founded in 1804 by Islamic scholar and reformer, Shehu Usman Dan Fodio. At its peak, the Caliphate was the largest state in West Africa and became known for its scholarship, administration, justice and promotion of Islamic values.

Today, the Sultanate Council remains a major custodian of that heritage and an important institution for Islamic leadership, peacebuilding and national cohesion in Nigeria.
