JUST IN:
President Tinubu Is On Point on Petrol Subsidy Debate
On the issue of petrol subsidy and other major economic decisions, the argument is becoming increasingly clear: Nigeria cannot afford to keep moving in circles. Policies that were once resisted or criticised should not suddenly become attractive simply because political circumstances have changed.
The subsidy debate has exposed a broader question about consistency in Nigerian politics. Citizens deserve to know where political actors stood when difficult decisions were being made and why their positions may have changed over time.
Nigeria also needs to move beyond the practice of recycling political ideas without examining their consequences. Leadership should be about presenting workable solutions, accepting responsibility and learning from previous experiences rather than simply repackaging old positions.
For supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the current economic reforms represent an attempt to address longstanding structural challenges, even as the policies continue to generate debate over their impact on Nigerians. The disagreements surrounding the reforms remain an important part of the national conversation.
At the same time, political accountability should apply across the board. Anyone seeking to return to public office should be prepared to explain their previous decisions, defend their current proposals and demonstrate what has changed in their approach.

Ultimately, Nigerians deserve politics centred on ideas, consistency and accountability rather than endless recycling of personalities and positions. The focus should be on solutions that can move the country forward and on leaders prepared to take responsibility for the choices they make.
