Update: Abia Government Restricts Private Motorcycle Riders from Carrying Passengers from June 29
Residents of Abia State who operate motorcycles for private use have been reminded that they will no longer be permitted to carry passengers beginning from June 29. The directive forms part of the state's efforts to strengthen security, improve road safety, and ensure better regulation of motorcycle operations across the state.
According to the new enforcement guidelines, motorcycles registered for private use are strictly for the owner's personal transportation and must not be used to convey any other person. Authorities have urged all private bike owners to familiarize themselves with the directive before the enforcement date to avoid unnecessary confrontations with law enforcement agencies.
The government explained that the measure is aimed at distinguishing genuine private motorcycle users from commercial operators. Officials believe that a clear separation between both categories will make monitoring easier and contribute to reducing criminal activities often associated with the misuse of motorcycles.
Commercial motorcycle operators who have been duly registered and licensed under the state's regulations are expected to continue operating within the approved guidelines. However, anyone using a privately registered motorcycle for commercial purposes or to transport passengers in violation of the directive risks facing legal consequences.
Security agencies and relevant government officials have been directed to begin full enforcement from June 29, and offenders may have their motorcycles impounded or be subjected to other penalties as provided by law. The government stressed that ignorance of the directive will not be accepted as an excuse once implementation begins.
The announcement has generated discussions among residents, with many calling on the authorities to ensure that enforcement is carried out professionally and fairly. Others have appealed for increased public awareness so that motorcycle owners fully understand the new rules before they take effect.
Citizens have therefore been encouraged to comply with the directive in the interest of public safety and security. The government maintains that the policy is designed to create a more orderly transport system while supporting ongoing efforts to protect lives and property across the state.

As the implementation date draws closer, all owners of privately registered motorcycles are advised to take note of the new regulation and make the necessary adjustments. From June 29, private motorcycles are expected to be used solely by their registered owners and not for carrying passengers.
